It runs along the same lines as labeling a person or a group a ‘socialist’, or a ‘Nazi’, or the like. It invites people to ignore what’s being said, dismissing the message as irrelevant. In a democracy, ceasing to hear opposing views is going to derail everything, as our currently deadlocked congress demonstrates.
